For me, writing isn’t always fun. Sometimes it’s so far removed from being fun that I forget how much I love doing it. But other times–like with this chapter, it can be so much fun that it’s hard to stop even after I’ve been typing for more hours than normal and top long to still be putting sentences to together with any hope of them being readable. So, why was this chapter so much fun to write? It’s because I’m very fond of my character Shahdow and I’ve reached a point when I can start putting him in situations where he really shines, and in ways that put a smile on my face and hopefully my readers too. Last post I said that I believe the best stories have romance in them, but even more important to me is that a story is fun, that it just makes you feel good as you read it; not always of course, there also need to be tears, fears and all their various cohorts. But, in the end, I want to be smiling when turn the last page of whatever I’m reading. (Nervous sigh) Now, with all of that being said, let’s go see if I can at least crack a smile at what I wrote.
Some good things happened, and yes, Mike did smile. It was sandwiched in between some grunts, groans and grimaces. I think the writing is getting smoother with each chapter as far as readably for a first draft, but let me stick in a quick however here. I think the style of writing has changed. Initially, Ehlsewhere had more of a fanciful/whimsical and somewhat detached quality to it, as the “Narrator” led us through the story. Now, we’re just thrust right in the middle of everything as the story unfolds around us. And as far as rewrites go…this is a significant problem. When it comes time to do the second draft, I’ll have to pick a style and see it through to the end. I can tell you that at least at times that will not be fun! Okay, back on the chapter. While it didn’t seem that all that much was happening plot wise, I feel it did progress the story. And I liked the way Shahdow is struggling with things internally while also growing up right before our eyes. So, while I didn’t enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it, I’m satisfied that its a good chapter, and I hope you liked it too.
May your days be joyful,
Mike
