Chapter Twenty Five – The Table is Set

So many things have to be introduced and set up in novel that it kind of reminds me of juggling…you’ve always got a couple of things in air that you’ve got to keep your eye on. But, there is something else that writing a loooooong story reminds me of even more…cooking. Cooking a multicourse dinner to be exact–not that I’ve done that many. When I have though, you are always on the move and trying to time things out just right. There are so many little details that seem to need to be done at same time; if you can’t multitask, you might as well walk away, you’re going to fail. And then finally, after all your hard work, you arrive at the point where everything is ready, the food is cooked and the table is set. As I was writing this chapter I felt that the table was set. All the key plot mechanics and characters have been introduced–I think–yes that can change, and now I just have to let the story play out. Which it really should do. As I’ve said before, events and characters take on a life of their own and you largely just have to ask yourself what’s likely to happen next–with some nice twists thrown in to keep it interesting…then write it. Gee, that sounds simple…it’s not, but for me it is a lot easier to continue writing a story that is already fleshed out than to have to keep grafting in new characters and plot aspects. Maybe that’s why there are some may book series out there. Anyway, this chapter is all about what happens after Ohrder realizes his past and the long expected prophecy are undeniably linked. That is one of the things that were already set on the table, and there are so many more that I can’t wait to get to. But, for now, let’s just see how this course went.

EHLSEWHERE Chapter Twenty Five

Like the second part of the last chapter, the writing here is flat, stale, lifeless, pick your adjective. I thought things picked up once we switched to Ohrder and Chahrity. The throne room felt like I was just putting out information that people needed to know. I want to keep the scene, but Ohrder baring his soul should have some emotion built into it. After reading that scene, I was like, “Nice to know, but…boring!” The chapter intro, about Ohrder’s roots, I really liked that, even thought it could use some polish. So, all in all, good meal, just lacked some essential seasonings.

Remember, everything is served better with a generous helping of love,

Mike
