Chapter Twelve – Main Plot vs Subplot

Honestly, I was feeling pretty good about how the story was developing overall at this point, but I was a little concerned that I’d been spending so much time on character development, subplots and background lore that the main plot was in danger of becoming a subplot. So, my main goal in this chapter was getting back to what the story was all about. The biggest dangling thread that led back in that direction was Shahdow’s concern that he was the incarnate harbinger of doom. And I had left him dangling too, which I couldn’t ignore much longer anyway. Then when I stopped to think about, I realized that he couldn’t have been the first person to have ever dealt with that situation, including someone who was already a big part of the story and his life. With all of that in play I felt I had the makings of a chapter that would be both gripping emotionally while also bringing the main storyline back to the forefront…if the level of my writing could rise to the occasion. Let’s go see how close I came…

EHLSEWHERE Chapter Twelve

I can say truthfully that I never have high expectations for my first drafts, still that doesn’t stop me from being demoralized when the writing really stinks. I’m telling you that because I want you to know that even though I’m the one doing the writing, I still either like it of don’t, just like my readers do. I like this chapter…a lot. I’m not saying it doesn’t need any polishing, but if all of my first drafts turned out like this, second drafts wouldn’t be nearly as painful as they normally are.

May the Lord shine his love upon you and yours,

Mike
